The BIOMASS satellite is part of ESA’s Living Planet Programme (Earth observation missions). The main objective of BIOMASS is to measure forest biomass in order to assess terrestrial carbon stocks and fluxes and better understand the planet’s carbon cycle.

The objective of the Monitoring Camera (MCA) is to provide images of the deployment of the large deployable reflector (LDR) and to provide visual confirmation of its final deployment status. The MCA instrument is an integrated camera unit equipped with wide-angle optics.
